Neil Waka

Neil’s broadcasting career started over 20 years ago in radio then he moved into television with TV3, prior to the fledging station going on air in 1989.

Trained as a radio journalist, and studying a double major in English and Psychology, Neil began as a News reporter and after a very short time became a News Presenter, which culminated in a three year presenting stint on Nightline, Producer/Reporter/Presenter for his own sports show for two years, weekend News Reader, and trainer for presenters and reporters over a four year period.

After nine years at TV3, he went to the US to train fulltime as a professional kick-boxer, also training with and working as a corner-man for world heavyweight kick-boxing champion Ray Sefo.

On his return to New Zealand Neil began working back in Radio, before being offered the News Presenters role on Breakfast Television with TVNZ.

The following year Neil became the News Presenter for One News Late Edition, and then took over as the 6pm week day Sports News Presenter, working along side Judy Bailey.

Neil has travelled the world and considers one of the highlights of his television career, presenting the Sports News from the Athens Olympics 2004.

Neil is a keen sports enthusiast, and besides being a kick boxing champion, has played provincial Rugby League, Basketball and Rugby. He has also competed in more than 10 triathlons, has run two marathons, and is a qualified Surf Lifeguard.

Neil is an experienced MC and keynote speaker and is an active supporter of over 10 charities.
