Mike Gourley
Michael (Mike) Gourley has a background in industrial and sport psychology. He is director of an international research and management consulting company, and helped establish the company in New Zealand and Australia. This role has given him extensive experience in motivation and leadership in commercial organisations.
He has facilitated groups on strategic issues, and helped implement sales and marketing strategies, as well as quality improvements. He has dealt with organisations like Winstone Industries, Montana Wines, Fletcher Wood Panels, Auckland City, Industrial Research, Spicer Financial Services and BOP Electricity on strategic planning.
As a rugby player he was a member of the Victoria University Rugby Club and played for New Zealand Universities. He was also in the squad of the Wellington Provincial team. During National Service he was in the NZSAS.
Having been a coach himself, he has helped coaches understand sport psychology on an individual basis and by conducting coach-the-coaches seminars.
Mike regularly addresses management conferences on achievement motivation. His presentations, while set in a sports scenario, apply to leading and motivating any group.
The material he has developed on coaching has been used in New Zealand, Australia, USA and Britain. He has included the material in his book 'The Psychological Edge in Rugby – Leadership and motivation in coaching team sports'.
