Michael Laws

Michael Laws is a multi-media personality, broadcaster, TV commentator, writer and publisher, and the sometimes controversial Mayor of Wanganui.

Michael was raised and educated in Wanganui before attending Whakatu freezing works and then Otago and Victoria Universities graduating with a First Class Honours degree from Otago and completing the Bill Manhire Masters writing course in 2000.

Michael worked as a university tutor (Otago) and parliamentary researcher before serving two terms as National MP for Hawke’s Bay. He resigned from Parliament in April 1996 but returned as campaign director for NZ First in the 1996 election that delivered that party the balance of power.

Since then Michael has reinvented himself as a writer, publisher, broadcaster and political commentator. As host of Radio Pacific's nationwide nine-to-noon talkback, 'The Michael Laws Show', he had 90,000 listeners. He then helped set up Radio Live and has the 9am to noon spot there.

He has written three best-selling books, 'The Demon Profession’, ‘Dancing with Beelzebub’ and ‘Gladiator – the Norm Hewitt story’. The last was #1 on the best seller lists for six weeks.

Michael is a regular columnist for the ‘Sunday Star-Times’. He has taken one of TV1’s ‘Intrepid Journeys’, been among those cast up on TV2’s ‘Celebrity Treasure Island’, and hosts Press Box on Sky TV every week. He and his wife continue to run their publishing company, Darius Press.
