John Hawkesby
John Hawkesby is acknowledged as one of New Zealand's leading television presenters. His ability to slip from radio to television to live performance with an easy charm and smooth professionalism made him one of the most in-demand properties on the broadcasting scene.
John worked for TVNZ and TV3 in a number of prime time news programmes.
John's popularity increased through his role as host of "It's in the Bag". His initial concern at following in the footsteps of what had until then been Selwyn Toogood's domain was unfounded. He went on to epitomise "It's in the Bag" which was filmed in front of capacity audiences throughout the country.
His consideration for others is well documented and evidenced by his incredible contribution as anchorman for numerous telethons and a vast number of other charities.
John is also a well-known radio personality. He achieved great popularity as a newsreader on Radio Hauraki, initially working with Kevin Black and Phil Gifford on their highly successful breakfast show. Following this he was a breakfast host on Classic Hits 97FM breakfast programme, where he was joined by Sarah-Kate Lynch and Chuck E, and was the breakfast newsreader for the More FM radio network.
His talent was recognised at the 1995, 1996 and 1997 Film and Television Awards where he received the award for Best Presenter.
John's professionalism and his warm personality make him highly sought after as a Master of Ceremonies or host for a wide range of functions, including the 1993, 1994 and 1995 highly successful "Philips Opera in the Park" at the Auckland Domain. He has been involved in hosting the successful Symphony Under the Stars annual free concert in the Auckland Domain for an audience of between 200,000 – 300,000 people.
In 1997 John was author of "Save The Last Dance For Me", a book of amusing anecdotes, with all royalties going to charity.
These days he spends a good deal of his time growing grapes on his winery on Waiheke Island, Auckland and writing regular wine columns.
