Hon Paul Keating
Paul Keating is one of Australia’s greatest political leaders.
Keating’s political career began in 1969. In 1975, at the age of just thirty one, he became a federal minister and held the portfolio of Minister for Northern Australia in the ALP Whitlam Cabinet.
When the Labour national government was elected in 1983, Mr Keating became Finance Minister, a position he held until 1991. As Finance Minister he implemented economic reforms that transformed the Australian economy, including the progressive deregulation of the financial sector, the float of the Australian dollar, extensive tax reform and the dismantling of many protectionist barriers.Mr Keating became Prime Minister of Australia in December 1991 and raised proposals for constitutional reform to facilitate Australia becoming a Republic.Keating is a political commentator, author and an engaging speaker who has a special talent of pulling together disparate ideas, trends and facts to produce a ‘big picture’-type analysis of the topic.
