Dr William Tan

Dr William Tan was born in 1957 and contracted Polio 2 years after birth, resulting in paralysis from the waist down. He is a man who has shown amazing strength in overcoming adversities. Dr Tan pursued his dream to become a scientist and medical doctor and graduated from Harvard University with a First Class Honours in Physiology. He has also trained at the Mayo Clinic, a world renowned facility in USA.

Dr Tan is also a talented sportsman who has competed in many international games including the 1988 Seoul Paralympics, the Commonwealth Games and the Asia-Pacific Games. Several years ago, he realised that, ‘winning medals, trophies or prize money should not be an end to itself. It should be a means to further goodness and to help people’. From this realisation he has devoted to championing as well as fundraising for needy causes around the world. Some of the things he has done to raise money have included skydiving, waterskiing, sailing and climbing buildings. Over the last 18 years he has raised a grand total of more than $14 million for charities both locally and internationally.

Dr Tan has competed in both the London and Boston Marathons and in 2005, Dr Tan became the first person in the world to undertake a wheelchair push in Antarctica. He has also completed 10 marathons in 7 continents in 70 days – an amazing achievement!
