Don Brash

Dr Don Brash is a policy consultant with an extensive knowledge of economics. He was appointed to the New Zealand Monetary and Economic Council in 1974 and he was Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand for 14 years, between 1988 and 2002. He has an international reputation in central banking.

He also understands politics, having been originally elected to the New Zealand Parliament in July 2002 as a member of the main Opposition party. In October 2003 he became leader of the main Opposition party, the New Zealand National Party. Dr Brash led the National Party to its highest share of the vote since 1990 and came extremely close to becoming Prime Minister. He resigned the Leadership of the National Party at the end of 2006 and left Parliament in February 2007.

In 2011, concerned about the direction of the country, he assumed the leadership of the ACT Party from outside Parliament. He contested the general election in November that year, but failed to get re-elected to Parliament.

Dr Brash has been a director of several public companies including the ANZ National Bank and Transpower New Zealand.

Dr Brash has a PhD (in Economics) from the Australian National University, Canberra Australia. His thesis for the degree was published the following year, 1966, by both the Harvard University Press and the Australian National University Press. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts (First Class Honours) from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, between 1958 to early 1962.
