Claudia Riegler was born in Salzburg, Austria in 1976. She competed for Austria until the age of 17 before switching to New Zealand. Claudia won four World Cup slalom races and came fourth at the 1996 world championships in Sierra Nevada.

Claudia's career included eight podium finishes in the World Cup – the last being a third placing in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, just before Christmas 2002. Her four wins included three in the 1996-97 season – at Park City, Crans Montana, and Laax – when she was placed second over all in the cup slalom standings.

She contested three Winter Olympics – Lillehammer 1994, Nagano 1998, and Salt Lake City 2002.

Ten years on, the World Cup slalom ski circuit took its toll on Claudia, who announced her retirement at the tender age of 26. Since then she has been one of the leading instructors at New Zealand's top skiing camps and a mentor, with three other champion sportspeople, in a scholarship programme for leading young athletes.

Claudia is patron of the Coronet Peak 50K endurance race which raises funds for the Cure Kids charity.
