Mike Hutcheson grew up in Nelson and was educated at Nelson College, Canterbury and Victoria Universities. He never finished his degree but did manage to break the World Rocking Chair record, mostly because it didn’t involve strenuous effort or threaten personal danger.

Mike co-founded advertising agencies Colenso BBDO and Hutcheson Knowles Marinkovich (HKM) and culminated his career in Auckland as Managing Director of Saatchi & Saatchi.

In 2003 Mike set up The Lighthouse Ideas Company, an innovation and start-up incubator, and in 2008 was involved in a management buyout of Image Centre Group, magazine publisher, printer and multi channel communications company. He is now Executive Director of the Group.

He contributed a regular humour column to The Independent for many years and also writes for Idealog magazine, one of Image Centre Group’s portfolio. His columns have been collected and published in two books, the modestly titled, “No1 Best Seller”, and “Beethoven’s Banker And Other Stories”. He also wrote “Kickstart Your Creativity”, with Rebecca Webster and “Relax and Grow Rich” – written with psychologist Claire Wadey.

Through storytelling, Mike shows audiences how to have better ideas by thinking easy rather than thinking hard. Mike adds fun to facts in a very entertaining way, delivering profound insights with wit and humour. He is an entertaining and insightful speaker, with a strong focus on branding, creativity and innovation.
