Mai is a founding partner of Chen Palmer Barristers and Solicitors, Australasia’s first public law specialist firm and winner of the 2007, 2008 and 2009 New Zealand Law Award for best Public Law Firm. Along with Mai’s law practice, and numerous board positions she is also an in demand keynote speaker, as one of New Zealand’s most prominent business women who has pioneered her field of law.

Mai has a First Class Law Honours degree from Otago University, a Masters degree from Harvard Law School, is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management, and an Honorary Associate of Auckland University of Technology.

Formerly a Senior Lecturer at Victoria University Law School, where she lectured, among other subjects, Maori Land Law. Mai sits on the Securities Commission; she is President of the Harvard Law School Alumni Association (New Zealand), and a member of the Asia New Zealand Foundation. Mai is an Associate Member on the New Zealand Advisory Board of Trade and Enterprise's Beachheads programme. Mai is Chair of the Inaugural Board of the Global Women Project, a member of the World Class New Zealand Network, and was a judge for the 2008 World Class New Zealand Awards. She was also a finalist in the Veuve Clicquot Award 2008 for the top New Zealand Businesswoman.

Mai was a Board member of the Asia 2000 Foundation for six years. She was special adviser to the Minister of Women’s Affairs, the Rt Hon Jenny Shipley, at the Beijing Women’s Conference in 1995. She has an extensive record of publications on public law.

Mai also does a range of pro bono work, including for the Auckland Zoo, New Zealand Endometriosis Foundation and He Huarahi Tamariki (the School for Teenage Parents in Tawa). Mai is President of the Harvard Law School Alumni Association (New Zealand), and was a member of the Royal New Zealand Ballet Board for four and a half years.
