When 14-year-old John Banks moved to Auckland, he had never met his Mum and Dad. At 16, both parents were sent to jail and he was on his own. He put himself through his last year of college, made money on the side by selling bottles and slept in the Domain. Then he began working after school at a bakery from 5pm to midnight.

John’s first jobs out of school were selling – he was the 8th best salesman in the world for Electrolux and the best in Pacific Asia for Pfizer Laboratories. At the same time he was buying and selling homes.

At 25 John moved into the restaurant business and began and ran a series of highly successful restaurants and taverns. At the same time, he felt the pull of public office and became involved first in local body politics and then at the national level as a Member of Parliament. He held a wide range of Ministerial portfolios. During his time in parliament John always continued other business interests.

He had his own show on Radio Pacific for four years and was named Best New Broadcaster in his first year and Best Broadcaster/Radio Personality of the Year in his second year.

John was asked to stand for the Auckland Mayoralty and was elected in 2001. Since the end of his term in 2004, he has been involved with various business interests including private education, property and a health food company.

With a wide ranging background in business and public office, John is able to present many topics including how to run a successful business, how to avoid disaster, how to look after your money and how to stay alive.

Unfortunately Hon John Banks is not available at present due to his mayoralty commitments but please contact us to discuss alternative options.
