Geoff Knight
Geoffrey Knight’s life story is extraordinary.
A rough diamond that has made good, Geoffrey has gone from being a rugged deep sea trawlerman and patch wearing member of the Highway 61 motorcycle gang, to a burgeoning international singer.
In 1995 Geoffrey found his unlikely way onto the stage via the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art. At the Academy, he was heard by renowned international bass and visiting tutor Grant Dickson, who said:
“I believe you have the talent, intelligence, and the potential to be a highly sought after singer on the international stage. With time, and a period of focused, disciplined training, who knows... the sky could be the limit.”
Since graduating in 1996 Geoffrey has gained over 10 years of professional performance experience that led to him switching in 2001 from a successful acting career to that of fledgling opera singer. From the first moment he set foot on stage in Turandot during that same year he knew opera was for him. Since then he has focused every spare moment on learning the skills of his trade.
Various roles and performances with Canterbury Opera compelled Christchurch solicitor Richard Burtt to gather a group of generous sponsors who provided the necessary funds to pay for Geoffrey’s part-time vocal development with Grant Dickson, based in Auckland.
The evidence of Geoffrey’s progress was clearly apparent when he sang to 1000 people in 2005 at the opening of the new TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Auckland. This performance inspired TelstraClear Pacific CEO Richard Jeffery to arrange an investment vehicle aimed at launching Geoffrey’s successful international career.
Geoffrey has recently been a lead tenor in a production in Sydney and will be auditioning for the Queensland Opera. He is also currently being groomed for Opera Australia and is an up and coming worldwide tenor.
