Slyriders
Slyriders are made up of Andrew McLennan, Toni Kenyon and Kevin Findlater. The band was formed because they all love music and they love to entertain. They have developed a genuinely unique sound, whether playing old hits, new hits or their own hits. The Slyriders guarantee a great night with their combination of pre-recorded backing tracks with live vocals and guitars, creating the ‘band experience’ while being able to adapt to any location – large or small. The Slyriders have an extensive repertoire and are just as happy entertaining at breakfasts and luncheons as they are rocking after midnight.
Andrew has had a successful and long history in the New Zealand music scene, winning the most promising vocalist award in 1983 at the NZ Music Awards, with his group Coconut Rough taking the most promising group award that same year. Andrew has also been a part of The Swingers and Pop Mechanix. Pop Mechanix ‘Jumping Out a Window’ was voted one of NZ’s top 100 songs by APRA and Coconut Rough’s number one hit song ‘Sierra Leonie’ is a Kiwi icon. Andrew worked for many years writing for Warner Music and brings huge vocal and writing talent to the Slyriders.
Kevin has worked with many bands over the years, but he is most well known for leaving his mark with Bulldogs All-Star Goodtime Band. They had many number 1 hits including ‘Miss September’ which sold the equivalent of one million in NZ in 1973 and another million seller ‘Everyone Knows’, which won Television One New Faces in 1974. Kevin also worked with Hogsnort Rupert, who will be remembered for their Loxene Gold Disk winner ‘Pretty Girl’, which also won Hogsnort the APRA Trophy for most successful original song. An offshoot of the Hogsnort band, Dave & the Dynamos, went to number 1 in 1984 with their gold disk hit ‘Life Begins at 40’ which still gets regularly wheeled out at 40th birthdays around the country.
Toni is the newbie on the block and the unknown quantity in the band. She grew up with a VOX amp and a double bass in her bedroom and has fond childhood memories of Saturday mornings spent gaffa taping cables at venues where her Dad played that night. A writer, who has discovered that she can sing, Toni has come full circle and again finds herself with gaffa tape in hand getting ready for the next gig.
